Exhaust system inspection (every 20,000 km or 12 months) (Transit 2)

1. When the engine is cold (at least three hours after work) perform a complete inspection of the exhaust system from the beginning of the exhaust manifold to the end of the exhaust pipe. Ideally, you would have a lift to raise the car and gain full access to the system; if a lift is not available, place the vehicle on stands.

2. Inspect pipes and connections for signs of leaks, severe corrosion or damage. Make sure all brackets and rubber mounts are in good condition and completely secure, if any of the rubber mounts require replacement, make sure the replacement mount you select is the correct type (see Figure 29.2). Leaks in hinges or other parts of the system usually leave black, soot-like stains at the leak location. Remember: None of the sealants designed for the exhaust system should be used on those parts of the system that precede the catalytic converter (if it is installed) - even if the sealant does not contain additives harmful to the catalyst, sealant particles can clog (pollute) catalyst element, thereby causing the system to overheat.

3. When inspecting the exhaust system, inspect the body for holes and cracks through which exhaust gases may enter the vehicle. If necessary, seal the body with silicone or body putty.

4. Grinding and noise while driving are often caused by loose exhaust system fastenings, which especially concerns rubber mounts. Try to stir up the system, muffler and catalytic converter. If any of the system components come into contact with the body or suspension, replace the system mounts with new ones.
