Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (chapter 5A).
2. From inside the vehicle, move the driver's seat back as far as it will go to gain access. Remove the retaining clips from the lower section of the driver's side fascia trim and remove it.
3. Prepare to clean up any leaks.
4. Remove the brake fluid reserve reservoir cap. Cover the reservoir with plastic film and tighten the reservoir cap over the film to prevent air from entering the reservoir.
5. To access the hydraulic system connections where they pass through the engine compartment bulkhead, move aside the wiring and hoses. On models with 4-cylinder engines, remove the air cleaner inlet hose and the air intake chamber (chapter 4A). On models with V-shaped 6-cylinder engines, it may be necessary to remove the upper section of the intake manifold (chapter 2B).
6. Inside the passenger compartment, loosen the clamps and disconnect the (upper) hose from the master cylinder (see Fig. 5.6). Plug the end of the hose to minimize leaks.
7. To remove the (lower) line, pull back on the elastic clamp and pull the line end out of the cylinder base. Plug the end of the line to minimize leaks.
8. In the driver's footwell, release the elastic ring that secures the master cylinder in its upper part with the clutch pedal.
9. Loosen the cylinder mounting nuts and pull it out through the bulkhead and footwell, preventing leaks.
Installation
Installation - in the reverse order of removal:
- a) Tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
- b) Secure the discharge hose with a new clamp.
- c) Install the removed components.
- d) Remove the film and add liquid to the tank (see Weekly Checks).
- d) Remove air from the hydraulic system (Chapter 10).
- e) If the fluid level in the reservoir has dropped significantly, it may be necessary to remove air from the brake hydraulic system (Chapter 9).
