General information about automatic transmission (Mondeo 1 and 2)

The CD4E automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic engine management system. It has two modes (economy and sport) and a high gear switch. When the driver presses this switch, fourth gear is not engaged in certain operating modes. When the economy mode is engaged, gear shifting occurs at low engine speeds, and when the sport mode is engaged, at high engine speeds.

The planetary gear and the main gear are connected to each other by a chain. The transmission has a radiator for cooling the working fluid.

There is no downshift switch because the downshift device is controlled by the throttle position sensor, which is part of the engine management system.

The electronic control system has a fail-safe mode that limits transmission functions but allows the vehicle to move to get to the garage.

The selector has the positions P, R, N, D, 2 and 1. To move the selector from the P position, the ignition must be on and the brake pedal must be depressed (for safety). When the battery is discharged, the selector solenoid does not function. If you need to move the car in this case, insert a pencil (or something similar) into the opening located on the left side of the central console. To move the selector, press the locked lever back.
