Removing, installing and adjusting the selector cable (Mondeo 1 and 2)

Removal


1. Apply the parking brake, raise the front end and place it on supports. Remove the left front wheel.

2. Remove the air flow meter and chute (chapter 4) to access the selector cable, which is located on the left side of the transmission.

3. Working under the vehicle, remove the heat shield to access the bottom of the selector lever assembly.

4. Disconnect the cable from the bottom of the selector lever assembly.

5. Turn the cable housing locking ring counterclockwise 90° to release it from the locking device on the selector lever plate located on the bottom of the lever. Hold the sleeve while turning the locking ring.

6. In the engine compartment, pull the cable end out of the transmission lever (see Fig. 3.6).

7. Remove the cable support bracket bolts from the transmission (see Fig. 3.7).

8. Disconnect the remaining cable supports and remove the cable assembly from the vehicle.



Installation and adjustment


9. Installation - in the reverse order of removal. Adjust the cable as follows.

10. Set the selector to position D.

11. When the cable is disconnected from the transmission lever, make sure that the lever is in position D. To do this, move the lever up and down until it is installed correctly. The next step is to check the alignment of the D mark on the selector lever position sensor (see Fig. 3.11).

12. Make sure that the cable locking ring is not locked, i.e. turned counterclockwise by 90°.

13. With the transmission lever and selector lever in position (D), install the cable end piece onto the transmission lever. Then turn the lock ring counterclockwise to lock it.

14. Install the heat-insulating casing on the bottom.

15. Install the air flow meter and chute.

16. Install the left front wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.

17. Test the vehicle on a road trip, monitoring the operation of the transmission.
