Removing and installing the driver's airbag (Focus 2)

The driver's airbag must be removed when repairing the steering components and electrical equipment of the vehicle, so the process of its removal and installation is described in this manual. However, to avoid injury, strictly adhere to the recommended sequence of work.

You will need a flat-blade screwdriver.

1. Disconnect the power supply to the airbag module by removing the fuse (shown in the photo by the arrow) in the main unit located under the instrument panel.

NOTE: Mounting block has been removed from vehicle for clarity.


WARNING: Attempting to remove the air bag module without disconnecting its power supply may result in unexpected air bag deployment.


WARNING: The following airbag removal operations may only be performed after the activator capacitor has been completely discharged. Wait at least 15 minutes after removing the fuse from the mounting block to discharge the capacitor.


WARNING: Do not disassemble the airbag module.


WARNING: Do not allow the air bag module to fall or come into contact with water, grease, or oil.


WARNING: Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures above 95°C.




2. Remove the steering column cover (see "Removing and installing the steering column cover").

7. Install the airbag in the reverse order of removal.
