The crankshaft position sensor signal is the basis for ignition timing calculations. The AC voltage signal from the crankshaft position sensor is converted into digital form by the powertrain control module. This digital signal is then used to determine the timing of the ignition coil primary circuit closure.
The ignition timing is determined by the powertrain control module based on engine operating conditions. Once the ignition timing is determined, the powertrain control module interrupts the current supply to the primary circuit of the ignition coil, thereby generating an ignition pulse that is sent through the spark plug wires to the spark plugs, where the ignition spark is generated.
The ignition coils are activated by the powertrain control module in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 2 and 3), sending one ignition spark to the cylinder where ignition occurs and one ignition spark to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke.
