Inspection and verification

1. Check the legitimacy of the customer's complaint by using the systems.

2. Check visually for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

3. If there is an obvious cause for a noted or received complaint, correct the problem (if it is possible) before moving on to the next step.

4. If the cause of the complaint is not obvious, check the symptom and refer to the Troubleshooting Table.

When checking for dust penetration and water leakage, the location of the sealant should be taken into account. As the vehicle moves forward, any uninsulated small openings in the lower section of the body allow air and dust to enter the body. When the ventilation ducts are opened, these pressures equalize. Dust accumulates in body openings in the luggage compartment area and can enter the luggage compartment.

To eliminate dust intrusion, pinpoint the area through which the dust is penetrating. Under certain conditions, water can also enter the bodywork at any point through which dust enters.

It may be necessary to remove the following vehicle trim panels to pinpoint the area where dust is entering:
  • Door threshold. See Section 501-05 for more information.
  • C-pillar trim. Refer to Section 501-05 for more information.
  • Rear seat back and frame, and rear seat cushion and frame. See Section 501-10 for more information.
  • Luggage compartment floor
  • Spare wheel
  • Sliding sunroof.

After removing the panel (to her) finishing the location of most leaks becomes apparent. Dust intrusion is usually indicated by accumulation of dust or sand. Isolate these areas, then road test the vehicle on a dusty road to ensure that all dust entry points have been removed. A suitable leak detector can be used to locate dust ingress, wind noise and water leaks.

After a road test, check for dust deposits around the perimeter of the door openings, side hood trim panel, bottom of the trim panel and in the luggage compartment.

Leaks can sometimes be located by shining a bright light on the underside of the vehicle if the above items are removed and looking at the inside of the body joints and welds. Bright light allows you to identify leaks.
