Typical engine malfunctions

Malfunction
Cause
Engine does not start:
- starter rotates slowly The battery is not fully charged. Oxidation of battery terminals. Poor contact between body, engine and negative battery terminal.
- the starter rotates normally, but the engine does not start Faulty starter clutch. Worn flywheel teeth.
Difficulty starting the engine Insufficient fuel supply. Low compression in the engine cylinders. High pressure fuel pump defective.
Individual flashes are observed in the cylinders, but the engine does not start Insufficient fuel supply. Suction of additional air in the power system.
Engine stopped and won't start Fuel is completely exhausted. Fuel filter dirty. The engine is overheated.
Engine keeps overheating Lack of coolant. Faulty thermostat. Not enough oil. Jamming brakes. Reduced radiator permeability. Reduced permeability of the pipes of the cooling system. It is forbidden to cool an overheated engine with cold water, as this can lead to the formation of cracks and cause deformation of individual engine components.
The presence of extraneous noise in the engine:
- whistle or hiss of air The tightness of the vacuum hose of the brake booster is broken. Burnt manifold gasket. Burnt cylinder head gasket. Slippage of drive V-belts on pulleys. Worn alternator bearing or water pump.
- loud knock Valve clearances not adjusted. Early injection of fuel into the cylinders. Defect on piston rings or pins.
- dull thud Worn main or connecting rod journals of the crankshaft.
Increased engine smoke Black smoke appears when the air filter is clogged or the nozzle needle is not completely closed. White smoke appears when the fuel is not completely burned, the fuel injection is delayed, or the injector is faulty. Blue smoke appears when the engine cylinder-piston group is worn out or the fuel system malfunctions.
