1. Remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system (see Removing refrigerant from the air conditioning system) and remove the compressor (see Removing and installing the compressor).
2. Remove the drive pulley (see Replacing the drive pulley bearing).
3. Mark the relative positions of the magnet housing and the compressor.
4. Using a special puller, squeeze and remove the magnet housing retaining ring.
5. Remove the magnet from the compressor front cover mounting belt.
6. Use an ohmmeter to check the electrical resistance of the electromagnet coil winding and the absence of a short circuit to the housing. A serviceable coil should have a resistance of 3.6–3.8 Ohms.
7. Assemble in the reverse order. Place the solenoid coil on the compressor and install the retaining ring.
NOTE: When installing the coil on the compressor, the locking lug A on the rear surface of the coil housing…
…must fit into the corresponding hole B on the compressor cover.
8. Press the pulley on. When pressing, apply force only to the inner bearing race.
WARNING: After pressing, check the rotation of the pulley. It should rotate smoothly, quietly, without jamming. There should be no contact with the electromagnet housing. If contact of the pulley with the magnet is detected during the check, it must be eliminated.
9. Install the compressor and other parts in the reverse order of removal.
10. Have the air conditioning system refilled with refrigerant at a specialist car air conditioning service centre.
