Adding frost protection

            0

For our latitudes, it is quite enough to have frost protection down to -30°С. On a Ford concentrate basis, this corresponds to a 50% blend. If the coolant level is adjusted from time to time by adding water, the antifreeze concentration for cold temperatures may not be sufficient. Check the mixture with a hydrometer, antifreeze. As a rule of Faust, it is true: about 3/4 liters of cooling concentrate increases protection against cold by about 10°C. If in doubt, check the composition of the coolant with your Ford dealer.

Attention: Genuine coolant must not be mixed with other products - after that, corrosion protection and compatibility with light metals are no longer guaranteed. In case of doubt, this can lead to an overhaul of your Mondeo. If you still want to supplement the fluid with a product of unknown origin, then it is better to replace the entire coolant.

PROCEDURE
  1. Depressurize the system using the cap on the expansion tank. Be careful when the engine is hot: risk of scalding.
  2. Place a clean collecting container under the radiator and open the clamp of the lower coolant hose, disconnect the hose from the nozzle or unscrew the reservoir drain screw.
  3. To make the coolant drain better, unscrew the cap on the expansion tank.
  4. Drain approximately 1-2 liters of coolant into the collection container and close it.
  5. Mount the bottom hose, if necessary using a new mounting clamp or a drain screw with a new O-ring.
  6. Fill the expansion tank with the required amount of coolant concentrate, then top up the remaining volume with the drained coolant.
  7. Don't forget to close the expansion tank.

Check: To check the correct ratio of the coolant mixture, it is necessary to have a hydrometer (density meter). This device works both with a measuring pointer and - as shown in the figure - with a plunger.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Engine is losing coolant

If your Mondeo loses large amounts of coolant while driving, never top up with cold water: a hot engine can get «cold shock». In extreme cases, the cylinder block or cylinder head of the engine may be torn. A broken engine is converted into scrap iron ahead of time, and a warped cylinder head no longer seals the cylinders: the coolant clearly flows out, mixes with engine oil, forming a lubricating emulsion. Let the Mondeo cool down thoroughly and fill with water only. In each case, the cause of the loss of coolant must be determined by a specialist.
