Adding freeze protection (Mondeo 3)

            0

For our latitudes, it is quite sufficient to have protection against freezing down to -30°C. Based on Ford concentrate, this corresponds to a 50% mixture. If the coolant level is adjusted from time to time by adding water, then the concentration of the antifreeze for cold temperatures may not be enough. Check the mixture with a hydrometer, antifreeze. As a rule of Faust, it is true: about 3/4 liter of coolant concentrate increases the protection against cold by about 10°C. In case of doubt, you can check the composition of the coolant at your Ford dealer.

Please note: Genuine coolant must not be mixed with other products – corrosion protection and compatibility with light metals are no longer guaranteed. In case of doubt, this may lead to a major overhaul of your Mondeo. If you still want to supplement the fluid with a product of unknown origin, it is better to replace the entire coolant.

ORDER OF EXECUTION

  1. Release the pressure in the system using the expansion tank cap. Be careful when the engine is hot: risk of scalding.
  2. Place a clean collecting container under the radiator and open the lower coolant hose clamp, disconnect the hose from the pipe or unscrew the drain screw of the reservoir.
  3. To allow the coolant to drain better, unscrew the expansion tank cap.
  4. Drain approximately 1-2 liters of coolant into the receiving container and close it.
  5. Install the lower hose, using a new clamp or drain screw with a new sealing ring if necessary.
  6. Fill the expansion tank with the required volume of coolant concentrate, then top up the remaining volume with the drained coolant.
  7. Don't forget to close the expansion tank.

Check: To check the correct coolant mixture ratio, you need a hydrometer (density meter). This device works with both a measuring pointer and - as shown in the figure - with a plunger.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

The engine is losing coolant

If your Mondeo loses large amounts of coolant while driving, do not add cold water under any circumstances: the hot engine may experience a "cold shock". In extreme cases, the cylinder block or cylinder head of the engine may be torn apart. A torn engine will prematurely turn into scrap metal, and a warped cylinder head will no longer seal the cylinders: the coolant will clearly leak out, mix with the engine oil, forming a lubricating emulsion. Let the Mondeo cool down thoroughly and add only water. In each case, the cause of the loss of coolant must be determined by a specialist.
