Your Mondeo has different types of switches. The steering column switch levers "peek out" from the trim to the right and left of the column. The heater fan and air distribution in the cabin are activated by a rotary switch on the center console. Electric windows (optional) have left for themselves key switches. On the contrary, push-button switches activate the rear fog lights, additional lights, and also the heating of the front and rear windows. With a little skill, you can replace key and push-button switches yourself. It is better to entrust the replacement of the switches on the steering column to the workers of your workshop, since this requires dismantling the steering wheel - and in it sits comfortably the airbag, work with which is best entrusted to a specialist.
Includes travel lock – steering wheel shaft lock/ignition switch lock
The steering wheel lock/ignition switch starts the engine and, if the ignition key is not present for five seconds, the automatic anti-theft system (PATS). After about half a turn of the steering wheel without the ignition key, the steering wheel lock is also locked. Experience has shown that defects rarely occur in the locking mechanisms. In older cars, situations do occur when the electrical contacts of the ignition switch "stick" or are corroded. Unfortunately, the contact plates cannot be replaced individually; the steering wheel lock/ignition switch must be replaced completely - and this work is best left to a Ford workshop. By the way, to check the anti-theft system - before leaving the car - you should look at the control lamp located above the clock. The anti-theft device is only "strong" if this lamp flashes approximately every two seconds with the ignition off. If your Mondeo has problems starting the engine, pay attention to the following: does the lamp go out every three seconds or instead of this "phenomenon" it switches to a fast flashing mode or constant burning for about a minute. In this case, the system does not recognize the key coding. Then remove the ignition key and after about 20 seconds try to start again.
Stops the data flow - "covered" ignition switch
If the indicator light stays on for about one minute and then starts flashing irregularly, the system has detected a fault. First, make sure the ignition key is not covered by other keys or metal particles (in the key ring). To avoid this becoming a source of the fault, try using a spare key or re-code the "out of order" copy with the "master key". If this seems too expensive, you should contact your Ford representative for assistance.
