The master key can be used to encode a spare key or a maximum of eight duplicate keys. The system is maintenance-free.

- First, turn the ignition switch to position "II" using the master key and…
- …then turn the master key back to position "0". Now remove the master key from the ignition switch.
- Insert the second key into the ignition switch and turn it to position "II".
- Turn the second key back to the "0" position and pull it out. This will activate the coding mode. At ten-second intervals, you can repeat this process with the next uncoded key.
- "Allow" the newly encoded keys to remain "at rest" for about five seconds - this is how long it takes for the system to activate the key.
- If the coding process is interrupted, the control lamp above the clock starts to flash. In this case, wait about 20 seconds and repeat the process.
- At a Ford workshop, you can replace the master key or "erase" the codes from already coded keys.
