1. The electrical system is 12-volt with a negative ground. The power supply for the lights and all electrical consumers is provided by a battery (acid with lead plates), which is charged by the generator.
2. This chapter provides information on repair and maintenance of various electrical components not related to the engine. Information on the battery, ignition system, alternator and starter is provided in chapter 5.
3. All models are equipped with a driver-side airbag, which is designed to prevent injury to the driver (chest and head) in an accident. An airbag for the front passenger is also supplied. The airbag sensor and electronic component unit is mounted near the steering column and contains a charging capacitor, a crash sensor, a deceleration sensor, a safety sensor, an integrated circuit and a microprocessor (see Fig. 1.3). The airbag is inflated by a gas generator. The airbag is ejected from under a cover located in the center of the steering wheel. A clock spring-type device ensures a reliable electrical connection of the airbag when the steering wheel is turned in either direction.

4. Later models are equipped with two airbags: for the driver and front passenger. They can also be equipped with side airbags, built into the front seats on the side. A separate sensor, installed under the driver's mat, is used to detect a side impact.
5. All UK models are fitted with an anti-theft alarm system, which includes an interior motion sensor and ignition immobiliser. On Saloon and Hatchback models the alarm horn is located in the boot on the left, and on the Estate model it is on the right.
6. Some models are equipped with a headlight beam tilt adjustment system. The system is activated by a handle installed on the front panel. In position "O" the headlights occupy the main position, and in position "5" the headlights have the maximum tilt angle.
7. To prevent short circuit and fire, always disconnect the negative battery cable when servicing the electrical system.
