Clutch diagnostics and testing

Since diagnostics of a fault actually begins with the start of repairs, the following procedure is recommended:

1. Check if you have a clear understanding of the customer's problem. If necessary, reproduce the problematic condition on the car.

2. If the problem cannot be reproduced, perform a test drive and/or visual inspection using the table below.

3. If the fault can be clearly identified by visual inspection, correct it and check whether the system now functions properly.

4. If the fault cannot be clearly identified, use the following Fault Symptom Table to identify it.

Mechanical factors:
  • Transmission oil leaks
  • Visibly damaged or worn components
  • Loose or missing bolts or nuts

•Insufficient free travel of the clutch pedal

•Obstruction of the clutch pedal movement (mat under the pedal)

•Tight clutch pedal

•Clutch pedal travel out of specification

• Greasy or oily clutch disc surface

•Worn clutch friction disc

•Damaged clutch pressure plate

•Damaged or worn out diaphragm springs

•Damaged flywheel

•Proceed to Pinpoint Test A.

•Clutch jerks

•Loose or worn engine or gearbox mounts

•Damaged diaphragm spring

•Damaged clutch pressure plate

•Overheating of the friction surface of the clutch pressure plate

•Damaged flywheel

• Grease or oil on the clutch friction disc

•Proceed to Pinpoint Test B.

•The clutch pedal vibrates

•Diaphragm spring failure

•Flywheel axial runout

•Proceed to Pinpoint Test D.

•Unusual noises

•Damage to the clutch release bearing

• Excessive crankshaft axial clearance

•Go to Pinpoint Test E.
