Because fault diagnosis actually begins with the start of repair, the following procedure is recommended:

1. Check if you clearly understand what the client's problem is. If necessary, reproduce the problem condition on the vehicle.

2. If the problem cannot be reproduced, perform a test drive and/or visual check using the following table.

3. If a visual check can clearly identify the problem, repair it and check if the system now functions correctly.

4. If the problem cannot be clearly identified, use the following Troubleshooting Table to identify the problem.

Visual Inspection Table


Mechanical factors:
  • Gear oil leaks
  • Visibly damaged or worn parts
  • Loose or missing bolts or nuts

•Obstruction of the clutch pedal movement (pad under the pedal)

• Stiff clutch pedal

• Clutch pedal travel out of specification

• Greasy or oil-stained clutch disc surface

• Damaged clutch pressure plate

• Damaged or dead diaphragm springs

• Damaged flywheel

•Go to Pinpoint Test A.

• Clutch jerks

• Loose or worn engine or transmission mounts

• Damaged diaphragm spring

• Damaged clutch pressure plate

• Overheating of the friction surface of the clutch pressure plate

• Damaged flywheel

•Grease or oil on clutch friction disc

•Go to Pinpoint Test B.

• Clutch pedal vibrates

•Faulty diaphragm spring

• Axial runout of the flywheel

•Go to Pinpoint test D.

• Unusual noises

• Damage to the clutch release bearing

• Excessive axial clearance of the crankshaft

•Go to Pinpoint Test E.
