Noises in the gearbox (Focus Turnier 1)

Whining or grinding noises in the gearbox almost always indicate worn gears or bearings. In the Focus, gearbox noises occur mainly at high mileage. But before you start an expensive repair, first check the transmission oil level.

Experience has shown that whining or grinding sounds in only one gear indicate wear of the gears or bearing of the gear of that gear. Noises during operation in all gears are most often a sign of wear in the main gear or in the gearbox bearings.

Scratching noises when changing gears indicate wear of the synchronizer rings or a "sticking" clutch disc. Synchronization is especially stressed in lower gears.
