Most exterior lighting "lamps" consist of a light source, a reflector, and a diffuser. Ford uses halogen lamps in the Focus as a light source for the headlights and fog lights. The Focus headlights have a complex profiled reflector, the inner surface of which has a thin layer of sprayed aluminum. It provides high light output. Reflectors reflect and focus light and increase the strength of the light - for example, when the high beam is on, the entire reflector transforms the light output of a halogen lamp by almost a thousand times. On the contrary, with a weaker low beam, only the upper half of the reflector is used.
Synthetic diffusers with optimized weight
The legislation describes a special light distribution with an asymmetrical light and shadow boundary as low beam. The maximum amount of light is concentrated on the right side of the road. Specially made diffusers focus the uniform reflected light in the desired direction with cylindrical lenses, prisms and parallel surfaces. The diffusers in the Focus are made of synthetic material. Synthetic materials are easier to profile than glass and are also approximately 70% lighter.
In damp weather, incorrectly adjusted headlights blind you and oncoming traffic. Therefore, check your headlights regularly - for example, for free during the autumn free promotions of ADAC, TUV and DEKRA. In addition, you should check the lighting equipment of your Focus yourself before each night drive. If you find a non-working headlight, fix the fault immediately.
It makes sense to have a set of spare lamps on board
The law requires that all external lighting equipment must always be in good working order. Therefore, prudent drivers carry a set of spare bulbs. The Focus only has 12V bulbs:
