General information
The charging system includes a generator with a built-in tension regulator, a low battery (or "ignition" indicator), a battery, and wires that connect all of these components. This system supplies power to the ignition system, lights, audio unit, etc. The generator is driven by an accessory drive belt located on the front side of the engine.
The purpose of a voltage regulator is to maintain the voltage at a specified value. This prevents voltage peaks, circuit overloads, etc.
The charging system does not require periodic maintenance. However, the accessory drive belt, battery and cables, and electrical connections should be inspected according to the schedule (chapter 1). The indicator on the front panel should light up when the ignition key is turned to position II or III, and then - immediately after the engine starts - it should go out. If the indicator does not go out or lights up when the engine is running, this indicates a malfunction in the charging system (paragraph 11). If the indicator does not light up when the ignition key is turned, and its bulb is in good condition (Chapter 12), then the generator is faulty.
Precautionary measures
Be extremely careful when connecting electrical connectors to circuits and consider the following:
- a) When connecting the wires from the battery to the generator, observe the polarity.
- b) Before performing electric welding work on the vehicle, disconnect the wires from the generator and battery.
- c) Never start the engine if the battery is connected to a charger.
- d) Always disconnect both battery cables before connecting the charger to the battery.
- d) The alternator drive belt may cause a serious accident if it is touched by hand or clothing.
- e) Since the generator is directly connected to the battery, in case of overload or short circuit it can spark and even cause a fire.
- g) Before cleaning the engine with steam or washing it with a jet of liquid, put a plastic bag on the generator and secure it with electrical tape.
- h) Never disconnect the wires from the generator terminals while the engine is running.
