Removing and installing the crankshaft pulley (Mondeo 1 and 2)

Removal

1. Remove the accessory drive belt. Remove it completely or just from the crankshaft pulley, depending on the procedure being performed (Chapter 1).

2. If necessary, turn the crankshaft until the MGR marks are aligned (paragraph 4).

3. When unscrewing the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt, prevent the shaft from turning. Follow these instructions:

a) If the engine/transmission unit is installed in the vehicle:

• 1) On models with manual transmission - engage top gear and have an assistant depress the brake pedal.
• 2) On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove the bolts securing the small metal cover from the oil pan. Use a power screwdriver or similar to block the faceplate gear as your assistant removes the pulley bolt. Be careful not to damage the teeth or adjacent components.

b) If the engine/transmission has already been removed but not separated:

• 1) On models with manual transmission - remove the starter (Chapter 5) and lock the flywheel in the same way as in step 2 (see above).
• 2) On models with automatic transmission - see subparagraph 2 above.

c) If the engine/transmission have already been removed and separated, perform the operation shown in Fig. 21.11.

4. Unscrew the pulley bolt and remove the pulley (see Fig. 8.4, a, b).

Installation

5. Installation - in the reverse order of removal. In this case, the pulley keyway should sit on the crankshaft key. Tighten the pulley bolt to the required torque.
