Necessary tools for work

            0

Good work results can only be achieved with a complete set of quality tools. So before you get to work, check your equipment: a bad tool that capitulates or bends at the first rusty screw creates problems and ruins a good mood. When buying tools, pay attention to quality - good tools are expensive and rarely found as a special offer in the collapse of building materials markets and shops. You will definitely find them in a specialized store. If you work only occasionally, it is enough to have the following basic equipment:

Key for spark plugs. Special socket wrench with rubber insert.

Screwdriver set with secure, non-slip handle for slotted, Phillips and TORX screws.

A set of open-end and overhead wrenches. It makes sense to have double-sided open-end wrenches with a jaw width from 6 to 19 mm. Rim/open-end wrenches with 10, 13, 17 and 19 mm openings you must buy for locked screw connections in the form of double-sided models.

Allen keys with dimensions 2-8 mm.

Pliers 1, side cutters 2 and water pump tongs 3 (length min. 240 mm). They bend, hold, turn and cut almost all materials in your car.

Locksmith's hammer 1 (recommended weight about 300g). Together with the punch, he takes out, for example, a tight-fitting hairpin. Sensitive workpieces such as bearings, cast or hardened parts must only be worked with a plastic or rubber mallet 1.

Center punch 1 marks holes when drilling. Punches 2 (diameter 3 and 6 mm) can be used universally for assembly and dismantling of running gear, engine and brakes. With chisel 3 (hardened cutter) you can handle, if necessary, even with deformed and rusted screw connections.

For work on wiring harnesses or when installing electricians, insulated Phillips and slotted screwdrivers are required as basic equipment 3 (size 1, 2, 3), phase control lamp 4, as well as insulated pliers 1 and crimping pliers 2.

Work in the engine compartment, under the vehicle, above the chassis is best done with a 2" torque wrench with ½" drive and the appropriate set of socket wrenches with inserts (type «nut»). Usually, «ratchet box» 1 is cheaper than buying the individual inserts needed for each case. For work in the cabin is also needed «ratchet box». Although in this case with a smaller drive ¼ inch. Along with screws with Phillips, slotted and TORX heads and plastic clamps, manufacturers mainly put here bolts with a spanner (SW) from 6 to 13 mm.

On-board tool kit

Check out the available on-board tool kit in your Focus. The best basic garage equipment will not help if there are no tools on the road in case of an accident. Does the car have a jack, wheel cross 1 and a screwdriver? In case of a swinging contact or a disconnected wire, pliers 2 will help, spare wire 3 and insulating tape 4. It is also advisable to have: a set of lamps 5 and spare fuses 6, a tow rope 7 or a tow bar, auxiliary wires for starting the engine 8 and a flashlight 9.

This repair manual is also better to have in the car, and not at home in a bookcase.
