Tools and fixtures

The choice of good tools is the key to good service and successful car repairs. For car owners who do not have such tools, their purchase will cause a significant expense. However, as long as the purchased tools are safe and of good quality, they will last for many years and save a lot of money.

To help the car owner decide what tools they need to perform the various jobs described in this manual, we have compiled three lists of tools under the following headings: "Maintenance and minor repairs". "Medium and major repairs", And "Special tool". Owners with no repair experience should start by purchasing a Service and Minor Repair Toolkit and limit themselves to a simple work station near the vehicle. Then, as you gain experience, you can move on to solving more complex problems. To do this, as needed, you will need to purchase additional tools. way toolbox "Maintenance and minor repairs" can be increased to a set "Medium and major repairs" over a significant period of time, without large one-time costs. Experienced mechanics may have a set of tools suitable for most repairs, as well as additional tools from "Special "category, provided that the cost of their acquisition will be justified by the frequent use of these tools.

Tool kit for maintenance and minor repairs

This list provides the minimum set of tools required for maintenance and minor repairs. We recommend buying combination wrenches (ring wrench on one side and open-end wrench on the other). Although these wrenches are more expensive, they combine the properties of both types of wrenches.

Set of wrenches:
  • Metric - from 8 to 19 mm inclusive
  • Adjustable wrench - jaws 35 mm (approximately).
  • candle key (with rubber insert)
  • Wrench for brake adjusters (depending on performance)
  • Spark Plug Gap Adjuster
  • Feeler set
  • Wrench for unscrewing the brake bleed nipples

Screwdrivers:
  • Flat end - 100mm long x 6mm diameter
  • Cross End - 100mm long x 6mm diameter

Tools:
  • pliers
  • Hacksaw
  • Tire pump
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • butter dish
  • Oil Filter Remover
  • Sandpaper (shallow)
  • Wire brush (small)
  • Funnel (average)

A set of tools for medium and major repairs

These tools and fixtures are essential for any major vehicle repair and complement the tool kit for maintenance and minor repairs.

The list includes a set of socket wrenches with interchangeable heads. Although it is expensive, however, it is very convenient for making repairs when loosening nuts and bolts with various heads. For these wrenches, we recommend a square head wrench as it can be used with most torque sockets.

The tools in this list sometimes need to be supplemented with tools from the Special List:
  • socket set (or box keys) with the same parameters as in the previous list
  • Crank with reversible ratchet drive (for use with sockets) (see fig. 7.1)
  • Extension cable at least 250 mm long (for use with sockets)
  • Vorotok with cardan joint (for use with sockets)
  • torque wrench (for use with sockets)
  • Self-locking clamps
  • Round head hammer
  • Soft head hammer (plastic, aluminum or rubber)
  • Screwdrivers with a flat end - long power, short (wide), narrow (for electrical work)
  • Phillips screwdrivers - long power, short (wide)
  • Long jaw pliers
  • Side cutters (for electrical work)
  • Spring ring pliers - external and internal
  • Chisel - 25 mm
  • Scriber
  • Scraper
  • Kern
  • beard
  • Hacksaw
  • Clamp for brake hoses (see fig. 7.4)
  • Brake bleeding kit (see fig. 7.2)
  • Drill set
  • steel ruler
  • hex keys (including slotted keys) (see fig. 7.3)
  • File set
  • Wire brush
  • Car stands
  • Jack (hydraulic or mobile)
  • Portable lamp with extension cord

Special tools and fixtures

The tools and fixtures on this list are not used often and are expensive. However, they must be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. If you rarely perform complex mechanical work, then purchasing these tools will not pay off. In this case, to buy such tools or rent them from specialists, you can team up with friends (or join the club of motorists).

The following list contains only commercially available tools and accessories, not those made by the vehicle manufacturer specifically for the dealer network. In this manual, you can find links to special tools. In this case, an alternative method of doing the job is usually given - without special tools. However, sometimes there is no alternative. If this is the case at the depot, and the appropriate tools cannot be purchased or rented, then dealers should be left to work.
  • Valve spring compressor
  • Valve grinding tool
  • Piston gauge jig
  • Device for removal / installation of piston gauges
  • Honing head for cylinder bore
  • Ball pin puller
  • Suspension Spring Compressor (if available)
  • Pullers for bearings and hubs with two / three legs
  • impact screwdriver
  • Micrometer and/or caliper (see fig. 7.6)

Buying tools

Supermarkets and large parts stores often offer excellent high quality tools and accessories at low prices.

Remember: it is not necessary to buy the most expensive tool, but we do not recommend buying the cheapest one either. beware "profitable deals", offered at sales from car trunks or similar places. Of course, you can also buy good tools here at reasonable prices, but always try to buy products that meet safety requirements. If in doubt, check with the owner or manager of the store.

Tool storage and maintenance

Once you have purchased the necessary tool kit, keep it in a clean and usable condition. After use, always clean the tools of dirt, oil and metal particles with a dry cloth. Never leave tools at work unless you are currently using them. Keep simple tools like screwdrivers and pliers on the walls of your garage, wrenches and sockets in a metal box. Any measuring devices, indicators, etc. must be stored in a place where they will be protected from damage and rust.

Exercise basic caution when working with tools and fixtures. From time to time, nicks appear on the hammer head, and screwdriver blades become dull. Give your tools a little attention, work with sandpaper or a file and you will return them to their original state.

Workplace

If the amount of planned work is greater than during normal maintenance, you need to take care of a comfortable workplace. Work such as assembly and disassembly of the engine, etc. should be made under the roof in the garage. Wherever possible, disassembly of parts should be done on a clean, flat bench or table of suitable height.

Any workbench must be equipped with a vise with an opening of up to 100 mm. These vises are suitable for most jobs. As mentioned above, a clean, dry place should be set aside for storing tools. In addition, space is required to store all kinds of lubricants, liquids, touch-up paint, etc.

One of the most popular tools in the garage is an electric drill with a chuck for drills with a diameter of at least B mm, which can be used for a wide variety of jobs.

Last but not least, always keep a few old newspapers and clean rags in your workspace, and keep it clean.
