Turn the steering wheel to one side or the other while watching the front wheels. The steering wheel should have a maximum clearance of approximately 30 mm without turning the wheels.
If there is more steering wheel play, check the steering rods, steering gear and front axle bearing play.
Move the tie rods back and forth with great force by hand. There should be no play in the ball joints, otherwise replace the joints or tie rods.
