To perform a number of engine operations, it is necessary that the piston positions in the cylinders be precisely fixed. Based on the top dead center of the first cylinder, the precise positions of the other pistons are automatically set.

TDC position of the 1st cylinder: the piston of the 1st cylinder (to the right relative to the direction of travel, in the V6 the rear row of cylinders) is precisely positioned at the top dead center if the valves of the fourth cylinder overlap (the exhaust valve is closed, the intake valve begins to open). The valves of the first cylinder are closed. In older engines with an ignition distributor, it was also possible to check the TDC of the 1st cylinder by the position of the distributor rotor and the flywheel (the distributor rotor is positioned above the marking on the distributor housing, the flywheel marking matches the mark on the inspection hole).



ORDER OF EXECUTION
  1. As with changing a wheel, lift the front wheel and set the 5th gear. If you now rotate the suspended wheel forward, the drive shaft will automatically "work" with it. It will be easier if you have previously removed the spark plugs (injectors). If you do not have the ability to "steadily" lift the car, then engage the 5th gear and carefully move the car until the piston of the 1st cylinder is set to the TDC position.
  2. With some practice, the engine can also be turned using a plug-in element - to do this, place this element on the alternator belt pulley. The engine will turn better if the drive belts are pressed against the belt drive. However, when using this method, make sure that the engine always turns clockwise.
  1. It can be precisely set only with a special tool: TDC of crankshafts. In Ford workshops, a TDC setting screw is screwed into the engine cylinder block from the side (special tool 303-507 (21-210). Then the engine is turned in the direction of rotation until the crankshaft cheeks are "tightly" adjacent to the setting pin.

  1. On the safe side, only with a special tool: Ford technicians set the camshafts to TDC using a special tool (indicated by the arrow).

Checking spark plugs


Since carburetor engines have a different attitude to forced ignition than diesel engines, spark plugs determine the working cycle here. In previous years, spark plugs were very sensitive parts that reached their serviceability limit no later than after 12,000 kilometers. With the advent of modern materials, lead-free gasoline and, above all, high-power electronic ignition systems, everything has changed fundamentally. However, spark plugs are still "allergic" to moisture, for example, after washing the engine, but a mileage of 60,000 kilometers is already common for them. Ford recommends replacing the plugs every 60,000 kilometers. However, you should never lose sight of the plugs, inspect the spark plugs every 20,000 kilometers: a specialist can judge the condition of the engine by the appearance of the plug.
