The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold (two manifolds on V6 engines), a downpipe and a catalytic converter, as well as components installed during the manufacture of the vehicle: a rear section with two or three mufflers and a tailpipe. The exhaust system is suspended on rubber supports installed along it.
Be especially careful when working on the fuel or exhaust system. Fuel can cause a fire. The exhaust system is very hot during operation. Even brief contact with it can cause serious burns. The catalytic converter also operates at very high temperatures (see Chapter 6).
Warning: The fuel system retains pressure for a long time after the engine has been switched off. Relieve any residual pressure before disconnecting any system components. Gasoline is highly flammable. Use extreme caution when working with the fuel system. Work in a well-ventilated area - open all windows and doors to create an exhaust hood. Do not smoke or allow open flames or unshielded incandescent lamps near the work area. Please note that fuel used in household appliances (heaters, boilers, dehumidifiers) is also dangerous. Keep this in mind when working near such equipment. Always have a fire extinguisher suitable for extinguishing burning petroleum products near the work area, and read the instructions for use before starting work. Protect your eyes (goggles, shield, etc.) when working with the fuel system, and if fuel gets on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water. Please note that fuel vapors are just as dangerous as liquid fuel. An empty fuel container may be hazardous due to the fuel vapors it contains. Caution: When working with fuel system components, pay particular attention to maintaining cleanliness. Dirt entering the system may cause clogging and poor engine performance.
