General information and precautions

The electrical system voltage is 12V negative ground. Power for the headlights and all elements of the electrical system is supplied from a battery that is charged by an alternator. This chapter contains repair and maintenance procedures for non-engine electrical components.

All Escort vehicles have airbags for the driver and front passenger, which are designed to reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision. The airbag sensor and electronic module are located near the steering column inside the vehicle and include a capacitor, collision sensor, decelerometer, safety sensor integrated circuit and microprocessor. The driver's airbag inflates with gas which pushes the airbag out of the module housing at the center of the steering wheel. A special spring clip ensures that the electrical wires of the airbag are securely connected; when the steering wheel is rotated, the spring twists and unwinds.

Precautionary measures

Attention. Before starting work on any of the elements of the vehicle's electrical system, it is necessary to disconnect the wire of the negative terminal of the battery to prevent a short circuit and / or fire during work.
