All Escort vehicles have air bags for the driver and front passenger, which are designed to reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision. The air bag sensor and electronic module are located near the steering column inside the car and include a condenser, a crash sensor, a decelerometer, a safety sensor integrated circuit and a microprocessor. The driver's air bag is filled with gas that pushes the bag out of the module housing in the center of the steering wheel. A special spring clip ensures that the air bag electrical wires are securely connected; when the steering wheel is turned, the spring is wound and unwound.
