Removing and installing the steering wheel (Mondeo 1)

Note: A dirty or sticky steering wheel can be cleaned with a neutral household cleaner and warm water, do not use cleaning agents containing abrasives.

Removal

Place the wheels in a straight line position.

Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.

Warning! This will erase data in electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory device or the radio code. Please read the section carefully "Removing and installing the battery", before disconnecting it.

Remove the airbag. To do this, unscrew the two mounting bolts from the instrument panel side.

Carefully detach the airbag and disconnect the airbag and horn multi-plug.

Attention! After removal, the inflatable cushion must be placed with the mechanism facing down to avoid accidental activation.

Remove the steering wheel mounting bolt, holding it from turning with your hand.



Mark the position of the steering wheel on the steering shaft. To do this, draw a line through the steering wheel and steering shaft with a felt-tip pen.

Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. This will require a lot of force, as the steering wheel is quite tightly seated on the shaft.

Installation

Check that the turn signal lever is in the middle position, otherwise the cam may be damaged when installing the steering wheel.

Place the steering wheel on the steering shaft cone so that the top of the spoke is horizontal.

Tighten the steering wheel hex bolt to 50 Nm.

Connect the multi-pin plug of the airbag and the horn.

Install the upper and lower steering shaft covers.

Connect the negative (-) cable to the battery terminal.

Set the anti-theft radio code.

Take a test drive and check the steering wheel position while driving straight. The top spoke of the steering wheel should be horizontal.

If the steering wheel tilts more than 30°, it must be reinstalled. If the tilt is less, adjust the steering wheel position.

Check that the turn signal lever automatically returns to the center position.
