The role of engine oil for the engine

            0

In the future, after this information, it will become clear: oil is an elixir of youth for an internal combustion engine. Friction and wear of pistons, cylinders, as well as all locations of the bearings of the crank mechanism and valve drives are reduced. In addition, engine oil causes the pistons to seal against the cylinder walls. Emerging «explosively» during the combustion of the fuel mixture, gases due to «oil gasket» almost without causing a loss act on the crankshaft. The talents of motor oil are far from exhausted by this: motor oil takes an active part in engine cooling. In addition, it protects the engine from rust, keeps pollutant particles in a state of equilibrium, and binds part of the chemical products of fuel combustion.

All-round talent - all-weather engine oil

Modern motor oils are lubricants made from petroleum. However, before starting their career as a motor oil, the oil manufacturer mixes some special additives into them. At the end of the refining chain, this amounts to up to 20% of engine oil. Additives, for example, protect the oil from oxidation and prevent it from foaming at high speeds. One of the most important additives are VI-improvers (VI - viscosity index). Explanation: VI additives are long molecular chains that swell when exposed to heat and contract again when cooled. Thus VI additions are automatically «govern» engine oil by engine temperature. With skillful mixing, several viscosity classes can be combined at once. However, VI-additives also have a negative wear property at high temperatures, which leads to the loss of the main part of their effect. In addition, water, fuel and combustion products set the limit on the life of an engine oil. Liquid mineral oil does not withstand over time the pressure and temperature parameters prevailing in the engine. Therefore, regular oil changes are not a forced luxury, but simply a technical and chemical necessity - at least when your engine should function smoothly.

Increased price - synthetic oils with good anti-friction properties

In principle, synthetic oils are not «artificial», like existing mineral oils, however they are always more expensive. Cause: Synthetic oils retain their molecular structure «natural» crude oil through the use of expensive technologies (Cracken), and they are mixed with special additives according to another recipe. As equivalent to a high purchase price, their manufacturers promise low oil and fuel consumption, high stability and long service life: in theory, this means an extended oil change interval. If you still want to enjoy such injection oil, then you should not so limitlessly exceed the extended drain interval prescribed by Ford.

TECHNICAL DICTIONARY

Concepts and norms related to oil

Viscosity: characterizes the measure of fluidity of lubricating oil. In winter, liquid engine oil, which immediately penetrates into all engine lubrication points during a cold start, is the first choice. In summer, on the contrary, a viscous engine oil is requested, which does not tear off the lubricating film even at high temperatures.

Oil classes according to SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers, USA - Society of Automotive Engineers): indicates the viscosity grade, eg SAE 5W-30. The lower the first number, the better the oil flows in the cold season (W - winter). Oil with the designation 0W lubricates even at minus 30°C, and class 5W oil raises this value to minus 25°C, 15W - respectively minus 15°C. The higher the second number, the more temperature stable the oil is considered to be at high temperatures.

ACEA (Association des Constructeuers Europeen dAutomobiles): Introduced in 1996, the European oil standards replaced the CCMS standards. For carbureted engines, group A1 is offered (fuel saving oil), A2 (low load oil), A3 (heavy duty oil). For diesel units, the division into B1, B2 and B3 is given here.

SSMS (Committee des Constructeuers dAutomobiles du Marche Commun): The specification consists of the letters G (petrol) and PD (diesel fuel), as well as numbers. The higher the number, the higher the quality of the oil.

API (American Petroleum Institute): the specification consists of the letter S (carbureted engines) and C (diesel engines), as well as subsequent letters. The higher this letter is in the alphabet, the higher the quality of the oil.

Engine oil - «study» by small seal on the bank

Your Mondeo's engine will suffice with traditional multigrade oil. However, it is important to know here that this «juice» meets the relevant standards. If in doubt, ask your dealer, as suitability is not to be judged by the promotional label on the can of oil, but by its content. So read the fine print on the can carefully: Ford recommends SAE 5W-30 engine oil for its Mondeos that meets at least the ACEA A1/B1 specification and WSS-M2C912-A1 or WSS-M2C913 (diesel oil WSS-M2C913-A or WSS-M2C912-A). If you wish to use other oils, they must meet at least the ACEA A3/B3 specification. Oils with API designation SC, SD, SE or SF (diesel API CC) can even damage your Mondeo.

Once the lubricating juice meets these criteria, you can mix oils from different manufacturers. However, it must be taken into account that the specific properties of the original recipes deteriorate. Each product is characterized by its specific composition, the effectiveness of which, when mixed with other oils, may weaken. For this reason, the combination of mineral and synthetic oil also does not make sense. Similarly, pure diesel oils should not be mixed with oils for carburetor engines - in the worst case, this will provoke the appearance of engine defects.

This puts you on the right track: Mondeo engines are not necessarily designed for expensive synthetic oils. Ford recommends SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils for our latitude range.

Perfectly normal - low oil consumption

Any engine consumes some oil. Partially, it enters the combustion chamber and participates in the combustion process there. A leaky engine, defective valve stem gaskets, worn oil scraper rings, too much clearance between the piston and cylinder, or too much clearance between the valve guides and the valve stem will increase the normal flow rate. When your Mondeo's engine is in good working order, small amounts of oil should be topped up during the prescribed oil change intervals as a last resort (0.25 - 0.5 liters). For diesel engines, there is no need to make exceptions in this regard either. This applies to all engines only if you regularly change the oil and do not load your engine with an excessively harsh way of driving.

The blue tint of the exhaust gas is a visual indicator of wear

The blue color of the exhaust gas indicates the presence of one of the above defects. However, even if the oil level is regularly kept constant, this is not a reason to rejoice. Excess fuel and water condensation dilute the engine oil, and its lubricating properties deteriorate. First of all, in winter and mainly when driving over short distances, one can observe such a phenomenon - the engine reaches its operating temperature less and less often after a long period of time and the residues may not burn out. In this case, the oil should be changed at shorter intervals; after about 6000 kilometers or every six months.
