It is recommended to perform ignition system diagnostics at specialized service stations. However, if any malfunctions occur in the system, you can perform diagnostics yourself.
The procedure for diagnosing the ignition system:
- external examination;
- check for spark formation;
- check the voltage supply to the control unit;
- check the ignition coil;
- if the fault is not detected, you must contact a specialized service station.
When checking spark formation, it is necessary to determine:
- reliability of the connection of wires and plug contacts;
- absence of damage (cracks or signs of warping) on the ignition coil sealing mastic;
- all parts of the ignition system must be dry and clean.
Checking the voltage of the secondary winding of the ignition coil
To check the voltage, follow these steps:
- remove one spark plug;
- place the tip on the spark plug and secure it to the engine block so that it is in reliable contact with the ground and cannot be thrown off by engine vibration. Do not hold the spark plug with your hand.
- crank the engine crankshaft with the starter;
- if strong spark discharges jump on the spark plug electrode, there is current in the ignition system at least on this ignition coil, the ignition system is most likely in good working order;
- if there are no sparks, then try to repeat the operation on another cylinder;
- if there is still no spark on the spark plug, you need to check the ignition system at a specialized service station.
