Brake fluid absorbs moisture through the pores of the brake hoses and the vent hole in the supply reservoir. As a result, the boiling point of the brake fluid decreases over time. Under heavy loads on the brakes, this can cause steam to form in the brake system pipes, resulting in poor system performance.
Brake fluid should be changed every two years, preferably in the spring. If you drive frequently in mountainous areas, change the brake fluid at shorter intervals. Changing brake fluid is described in p. 15.11.
