Engine oil level

Before the trip

Make sure the vehicle is on level ground.

Check the oil level before starting the engine or not earlier than 5 minutes after stopping it.

Oil grade

Modern engines are very sensitive to the brand of oil being filled in. It is very important to fill the engine with the oil of the brand that your car needs, (see "Lubricants, fluids and tire pressure").

Preventive measures

If you have to add oil to the engine frequently, check for leaks. To do this, place a sheet of clean paper under the engine overnight and check its condition in the morning. If there are no leaks, then this may mean that the oil may burn out in the engine due to worn o-rings (see "troubleshooting").

Always keep the oil level between the lower and upper marks on the dipstick (see fig. 2). Lack of oil can lead to very serious malfunctions. A high level is also harmful - it can lead to failure of the sealing cuffs.

1. The top end of the dipstick is usually brightly colored to make it easy to find (see fig. "Checkpoints under the hood"). Remove the dipstick. Use a clean rag or paper towel to dry the bottom end of the dipstick.

2. Insert a clean dipstick all the way into the neck and pull it out again. Hold the dipstick by the handle so that the oil does not flow down it - otherwise, you will get an incorrect reading. Check the oil level, which should be between the marks "MIN" And "MAX".

3. Oil should be added through the filler neck. Loosen the cap...

4.... and add oil. Use a funnel to avoid spilling oil. Add oil in small portions, periodically checking the level. Don't spill (see "Preventive measures").

Advice

If you measure the oil level immediately after stopping the engine, then some of the oil will not have time to drain from the top of the engine, and the dipstick will show a low level.
