Suspension and steering (Transit 2)

Caution: Before diagnosing suspension or steering problems, ensure the problem is not caused by incorrect tire pressure, incorrect tire type, or brake drag.


The car pulls to the side


  • The tire has a defect (Chapter 1).
  • Excessive wear of suspension or steering components (Chapter 10).
  • Incorrect installation of the front wheels (Chapter 10).
  • Accidental damage to steering or suspension components (Chapter 10).

Wheel runout and vibration


  • Front wheel imbalance (the vibration is felt mainly through the steering wheel) (Chapter 10).
  • Rear wheel imbalance (the vibration can be felt throughout the car) (Chapter 10).
  • Wheels are damaged or bent (Chapter 1).
  • The tire is damaged (Chapter 1).
  • Worn steering or suspension joints, bushings, or components (Chapter 10).
  • The wheel nuts have come loose (Chapter 10).

When turning or braking, the vehicle leans excessively to one side, rocks, or sways


  • The shock absorbers are faulty (Chapter 10).
  • A coil spring, leaf spring, or other suspension component is damaged or weak (Chapter 10).
  • The anti-roll bar is worn or damaged (if it is installed), or its fastenings (Chapter 10).

Weaving on the road or general instability of the vehicle


  • The front wheels are not installed correctly (Chapter 10).
  • Worn ball joints, bushings or other steering or suspension components (Chapter 10).
  • Wheel imbalance (Chapter 10).
  • The tire is damaged (Chapter 1).
  • The wheel nuts have come loose (Chapter 10).
  • The shock absorbers are faulty (Chapter 10).

Overly rigid control


  • Lack of lubrication in the steering gear - possibly caused by a crack in the rubber protective coating (Chapter 10).
  • The ball joint of the tie rod end or the suspension joint is seizing (Chapter 10).
  • The power steering pump drive belt is broken or incorrectly adjusted (Chapter 1).
  • The front wheels are not installed correctly (Chapter 10).
  • The steering column is bent or damaged (Chapter 10).

Excessive play in the steering


  • The universal joint or intermediate connections of the steering column are worn out (Chapter 10).
  • The steering rod ball joints are worn out (Chapter 10).
  • The rack and pinion steering mechanism is worn out (Chapter 10).
  • Worn steering or suspension joints, bushings, or components (Chapter 10).

The power steering does not work


  • The power steering pump drive belt is worn or incorrectly adjusted (Chapter 1).
  • The power steering fluid level is out of acceptable range (Chapter 1).
  • The power steering pump is faulty (Chapter 10).
  • The steering gear is faulty (Chapter 10).

Excessive tire wear. Tire wear on the inner or outer edge


  • Insufficient tire pressure (wear on both sides of the tire) (Chapter 1).
  • Incorrect camber angle or caster angle (wear on one edge only) (Chapter 10).
  • Worn steering or suspension joints, bushings, or components (Chapter 10).
  • Unexpected failure of any component.
