Automatic transmission (Transit 2)

            0

Caution: Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission, it is difficult for the home mechanic to properly diagnose and service this unit. If problems other than those listed below occur, the vehicle should be referred to the dealer service department or an automatic transmission specialist. Do not rush to remove the transmission if you suspect a problem, as most diagnostic tests should be performed with the transmission still installed.

Transmission fluid leaks

Automatic transmission fluid is usually dark in color. Leaks of this fluid should not be confused with engine oil leaks, which can easily fall onto the gearbox, being carried away by the oncoming air flow.

To determine the source of the leak, first remove all accumulated soot and dirt, including deep-seated dirt, from the transmission housing and surrounding areas by degreasing or steam cleaning. Drive for a short distance, keeping the vehicle at low speed to prevent the oncoming air flow from carrying the leak far from the source. After jacking up the car and placing it on supports, determine the location of the leak. Refer to the appropriate chapters when leaks are detected in the following general areas:
  • a) Oil collector (Chapters 1 and 7B);
  • b) Tube for measuring the transmission fluid level (Chapters 1 and 7B);
  • c) Tubes and fittings of the transmission fluid cooling radiator (Chapter 7B).

The transmission fluid is brown in color or has a burnt odor

  • The transmission fluid level is low or the fluid needs to be replaced (Chapter 1).

Common problems with gear shifting

Chapter 7B describes how to check and adjust the automatic transmission shift cable. Here are common problems that can be caused by a poorly adjusted cable:
  • a) The engine starts not only in the "Park" or "Neutral" position;
  • b) The indicator panel shows that a gear other than the one being used is engaged;
  • c) The car starts moving in the "Park" or "Neutral" positions;
  • d) No effect from gear shifting or inadequate gear shifting.

* For questions about adjusting the gear shift cable, please refer to Chapter 7B.

The gear does not downshift when the gas pedal is fully depressed

  • Low transmission fluid level (Chapter 1).
  • The downshift cable is not adjusted correctly (Chapter 7B).
  • The gear shift cable is not adjusted correctly.

The engine does not start in any gear or starts in gears other than "Parking" and "Neutral"

  • The lock switch is not adjusted correctly (Chapter 7B).
  • The gear shift cable is not adjusted correctly (Chapter 7B).

The transmission slips, shifts roughly, is noisy, or does not work in forward gears or in reverse

The above mentioned problems can be caused by a variety of reasons, but only one of them should concern the home mechanic - the transmission fluid level. Before taking your vehicle to a dealer or other professional for inspection, check the fluid level and condition as described in Chapter 1. If necessary, correct the fluid level or replace the fluid and filter. If the problem persists, professional help will be required.
