Note: Problems related to the engine starting system are covered earlier in this Section in the subsection "Engine".


The battery holds a charge for no more than a few days


  • Internal battery failure (Chapter 5).
  • Low electrolyte level in the battery - if the battery allows replenishment of the electrolyte level (Chapter 1).
  • The battery terminals are worn or dirty (Chapter 1).
  • The alternator drive belt is worn or incorrectly adjusted (Chapter 1).
  • The alternator does not provide the required output voltage (Chapter 5).
  • The alternator or voltage regulator is faulty (Chapter 5).
  • Short circuit in the circuit, resulting in continuous discharge of the battery (Chapter 5).

The battery charge indicator light ("no-charge") remains on even after the engine is started


  • The alternator drive belt is worn or improperly adjusted (Chapter 1).
  • The alternator brushes are worn, sticking or dirty (Chapter 5).
  • Weak pressure of the alternator brushes (Chapter 5).
  • Internal fault in the alternator or voltage regulator (Chapter 5).
  • The charging circuit wires are broken, disconnected or torn off (Chapter 5).

The battery charge indicator light ("no-charge") does not light up


  • The light bulb burned out (Chapter 12).
  • The wires in the hazard warning lamp circuit are broken, disconnected or torn (Chapter 12).
  • The alternator is faulty (Chapter 5).

Any of the lights are not working


  • The light bulb burned out (Chapter 12).
  • The contacts of the bulb or socket are dirty (Chapter 12).
  • The fuse has blown (Chapter 12).
  • Relay faulty (Chapter 12).
  • The wires are broken, disconnected or torn (Chapter 12).
  • The switch is faulty (Chapter 12).
  • The readings from any of the instruments are inaccurate or erratic.
  • The readings increase with engine speed.
  • The voltage regulator is faulty (Chapter 5).

Fuel level or temperature gauges always show "zero"


  • The pointer sensor is faulty (Chapters 3 and 4).
  • Break in the Chain (Chapter 5).
  • The pointer is faulty (Chapter 12).

Fuel level and temperature gauges always show maximum value


  • The pointer sensor is faulty (Chapters 3 and 4).
  • Short circuit in the circuit (Chapter 5)
  • The pointer is faulty (Chapter 12).

The signal does not work or works poorly



The signal does not turn off


  • Short circuit in signal or short circuit of signal to ground (Chapter 12).
  • Short circuit between signal and button (Chapter 12).

The horn does not work



The signal produces an unstable or unsatisfactory sound



The windshield and rear window wipers do not work satisfactorily. Windshield wipers do not work or work very slowly


  • The wiper blades are rubbing against the glass, or the drive rod is sticking (Chapters 1 and 12).
  • The fuse has blown (Chapter 12).
  • The cable or cable plugs are broken, disconnected or torn off (Chapter 12).
  • Relay faulty (Chapter 12).
  • The windshield wiper motor is faulty (Chapter 12).

The wiper blades cover too much or too little area of the glass


  • The windshield wiper arms are not correctly positioned on the pivot points (Chapter 12).
  • The windshield wiper drive is excessively worn (Chapter 12).
  • The windshield wiper motor or drive mounts have become loose (Chapter 12).

The windshield wipers cannot clean the glass effectively


  • The rubber pads of the windshield wipers are worn out or damaged (Chapter 1).
  • The return springs are broken or the wiper arm pivots are jammed (Chapter 12).
  • The effectiveness of the used washer additive is not sufficient to remove road dust (Chapter 1).

The windshield and rear window washers do not work or work poorly. One or more washer jets are not working


  • The washer jet is clogged (Chapter 12).
  • The fluid supply hose is disconnected, kinked or pinched (Chapter 12).
  • Not enough fluid in the washer reservoir (Chapter 1).

The washer pump works for a while and only then does the liquid start to flow out of the nozzles


  • The one-way valve of the fluid supply hose is faulty (Chapter 12).

The washer pump is not working



The electric windows do not work or work poorly. The glass moves in only one direction



The glass moves slowly


  • The window regulator is stuck, damaged or requires lubrication (Chapter 11).
  • Interior components or door trim are interfering with the movement of the window lift (Chapter 11).
  • The window lift motor is faulty (Chapter 11).

The glass doesn't move




The central locking does not work or works poorly



Complete system failure



Locks do not lock or unlock



One of the central locking solenoid valves or motors is not working


  • Broken, disconnected or torn wires or wire plugs (Chapter 12).
  • One of the solenoid valves or motors is faulty (Chapter 11).
  • The valve rods are broken or disconnected (Chapter 11).
  • The door latch is faulty (Chapter 11).
