Electrical system malfunctions

Note: Faults related to the starting system are listed under the heading "Engine" (see above in this section).

Battery drains in a few days


  • Internal battery fault (Chapter 5).
  • Low electrolyte level (Chapter 1).
  • Loose or corroded battery terminal clamps (Chapter 5).
  • Worn or improperly installed accessory drive belt (Chapter 1).
  • Absence of charging from the generator at its normal output parameters (Chapter 5).
  • Malfunction of the generator or voltage regulator (Chapter 5).
  • Short circuit causing battery drain (Chapters 5 and 12).


The ignition/battery discharge indicator does not go out when the engine is started


  • Worn or improperly installed accessory drive belt (Chapter 1).
  • Worn, sticky or dirty alternator brushes (Chapter 5).
  • Broken or weakened alternator brush springs (Chapter 5).
  • Internal fault in alternator or voltage regulator (Chapter 5).
  • Breakage, disconnection or loosening of contacts in the charging circuit (Chapter 5).


The ignition/battery discharge indicator does not light up when the ignition is turned on


  • Indicator pump burnt out (Chapter 12).
  • Open, disconnected or loose contact in indicator lamp circuit (Chapters 5 and 12).
  • Generator malfunction (Chapter 5).


Lighting fixtures not working




Inaccuracy or instability of instrument readings


Instrument readings increase with increasing engine speed



Fuel or temperature gauges not showing

Fuel gauges or temperature gauges constantly give the maximum reading


Failure or unsatisfactory operation of the sound signal


Sound signal does not work

Pulsation or intermittent sound from the horn

Beep does not turn off


Failure or poor performance of windshield wipers


Windshield wipers not working or very slow
  • Sticking wiper blades to glass or sticking linkage (Chapters 1 and 12).
  • Blown fuse (Chapter 12).
  • Broken, loose or disconnected wire or wire connections (Chapter 12).
  • Relay failure (Chapter 12).
  • Wiper Motor Malfunction (Chapter 12).

Wiper blades move over too large or too small an area of glass
  • Incorrect installation of wiper arms on shafts (Chapter 1).
  • Excessive wiper linkage wear (Chapter 12).
  • Loose wiper motor or linkage (Chapter 12).

Wiper blades are inefficient
  • Worn or damaged rubber pads on the wiper blades (Chapter 1).
  • Clamp springs broken or rocker arm hinges stuck (Chapter 12).
  • Insufficient detergent content in the washer fluid for effective glass cleaning (Chapter 1).


Failure or unsatisfactory operation of the washers


One or more washer jets not working


  • Dirty nozzle openings (Chapter 1).
  • Disconnected or kinked hose (Chapter 1).
  • Insufficient amount of fluid in the washer reservoir (Chapter 1).

Washer pump not working

Time delay between the start of the washer pump and the start of spraying liquid from the nozzles
  • Faulty non-return valve in the washer hose (Chapter 12).


Failure or unsatisfactory operation of the power window


Glass only moves in one direction

Glass moves slowly
  • Incorrect installation of glass guides (Chapter 11).
  • Damaged, seized or lack of lubrication of the power window actuator (Chapter 11).
  • Contamination of the drive or internal components of the door (Chapter 11).
  • Engine malfunction (Chapter 12).

Glass does not move


Failure or unsatisfactory operation of the central locking system


The system is completely inoperable

Locks close but won't open or open but won't close

One of the locks does not work
  • Wiring failure (Chapter 12).
  • Engine malfunction (Chapter 11).
  • Breakage, jamming or disconnection of the levers or linkages of the linkage of the locks (Chapter 11).
  • Door lock malfunction (Chapter 11).
