2. Note the position of the tie rod ball joint lock nut by counting the number of threads from the face of the nut to the edge of the tie rod, then unscrew and remove the lock nut.
3. Remove the clamps and slide the protective boot off the tie rod and steering gear housing.
4. Place the new protective boot first on the tie rod and then on the steering gear. Make sure the protective boot is positioned in the recesses in the tie rod and steering gear housing, if provided.
5. Install and tighten the clamps so as not to twist the protective coating (see Figure 27.5).

6. Thread the ball joint lock nut onto the tie rod so that the number of threads remains as noted during removal.
7. Install the tie rod end ball joint as described in Section 26.
