Models without airbag
Removal
1. Set the front wheels straight. Using a hook, remove the steering wheel center cover (see Figure 22.1).
Figure 22.1. After removing the center cover, unscrew the steering wheel fixing nut.
2. After unscrewing the locking nut, pull the steering wheel towards you and remove it from the shaft. The steering wheel has a guide groove that ensures engagement with the shaft.
Models with airbag
Warning: Handle the air bag assembly with extreme care as a personal safety device and always hold it with the air bag cover facing away from your body. If you have any doubt that any work performed on the air bag assembly or control system will affect the proper operation of the air bag, be sure to consult your Ford dealer or other qualified professional.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Warning: Before proceeding, wait at least 15 minutes for the energy in the holding tank to dissipate to avoid accidental deployment of the airbag.
4. Turn the steering wheel to access one of the airbag retaining bolts from the rear of the steering wheel. Remove the bolt, then turn the steering wheel again until the second bolt becomes accessible. Unscrew this bolt as well.
5. After removing the airbag from the steering wheel, access the multi-pin connector (see Figure 22.5).
Figure 22.5. After removing the airbag assembly from the steering wheel, disconnect the multi-pin connector.
6. Disconnect the multi-plug from the rear of the airbag and remove it from the vehicle.
Warning: Store the airbag in a safe place with the mechanism facing down to prevent accidental deployment.
Warning: Do not attempt to open or repair the airbag or apply any electrical current to it. Do not use an airbag that is visibly damaged or bent.
Installation
All models
7. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Align the steering wheel hub guide groove with the shaft guide groove and slide the steering wheel onto the shaft. Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque. Install the air spring or center cap, depending on the model, then connect the negative battery cable.
