Removal
1. With the parking brake applied, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
2. After removing the cotter pin, unscrew the locking nut and separate the longitudinal steering rod from the steering arm using a ball joint puller (see Figure 28.2.).
3. Unscrew the nut securing the steering arm to the steering gear. If the bipod does not have a guide groove, mark the installation position of the steering bipod on the steering shaft by scratching two marks on the shaft and on the bipod. Pull the steering arm out of the shaft using a puller (see Figure 28.3).
Installation
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, but please note the following additional points:
- a) Set the steering gear to the center position before connecting the steering arm and make sure that the marks or guide grooves made during removal are aligned;
- b) Tighten the lock nuts to the specified torque and insert a new cotter pin to secure the tie rod castle nut;
- c) Upon completion, check the operation of the steering wheel by turning it from one end to the other. Make sure the front wheels point straight ahead when the steering wheel is in the center position. If wheel alignment is required, adjust the steering link as described in section 31.
