Cars with independent front suspension
Removal
1. Vehicles with independent front suspension are equipped with a ZF type power steering system with a rack and pinion steering mechanism. The drive removal procedure is essentially the same as for a steering mechanism without power assistance (see Section 25), but additionally the hydraulic pipes should be disconnected. To do this, place a container under the steering gear, then unscrew the retaining plate and pull the tubes out of the steering gear housing (see Figure 33.1). After disconnecting the tubes, allow the liquid to drain into the container. Close the ends of the tubes and the openings in the steering gear that open after disconnection with plugs to avoid contamination.

2. In addition, it is necessary to separate the power steering tubes from their mountings on the steering gear housing in order to remove them. For more information on power steering pipes and hoses, see Section 34.
Cars with dependent front suspension
3. Vehicles with dependent front suspension are equipped with a Bendix-type power steering gear. The procedure for removing the gear is essentially the same as for a steering gear without power assistance (see Section 28), but additionally the hydraulic pipes should be disconnected. To do this, place a container under the steering gear, then disconnect the pressure and drain pipes, and drain the working fluid (see Figure 33.3,a). Close the ends of the tubes and the openings in the steering gear that open after disconnection with plugs to avoid contamination. Note also that the steering gear is secured with four retaining bolts, as opposed to three bolts on non-power steering gears (see Figure 33.3,b).

Installation
All models
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, but please note the following additional points:
- a) When connecting the hydraulic pipes of the steering gear, be careful not to overtighten the connections;
- b) Fill and bleed the power steering system as described in Section 35.
