Caution: If the timing belt is coated with engine oil, remove the timing belt, replace the sealing rings, thoroughly clean the front of the engine and install a new timing belt.
If the timing belt is clean, remove it from the pulley without twisting it too much. Do not rotate the crankshaft with the timing belt removed.
Unscrew the bolt and remove the pulley from the camshaft. Unscrew the bolt securing the right camshaft bearing cap and remove the defective oil seal ring. Clean the seal ring seat and remove any burrs or scratches that may have caused the seal ring to fail. Install a new seal ring. Ford recommends using special tool 21-0096 with a bolt (M 10x70) and a drift, which is used to install the seal ring in place when the camshaft bearing cap is in place. Before installation, lubricate the working lips of the seal ring and the seat with engine oil (see Fig. 2C.23).
For most owners, the easiest method for installing the sealing ring is after removing the bearing cap. Lubricate the sealing ring lips with engine oil and slide it onto the camshaft, then install the bearing cap. Check that the sealing ring has not been deformed when installing and tightening the cap mounting bolts (see Fig. 2C.24).
Install the pulley onto the camshaft and place the timing belt on the pulley.
Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
