Replacing the intermediate support bearing (Mondeo 4)

The intermediate support bearing can be removed from the right-hand drive intermediate shaft without disassembling the inner joint. However, care must be taken not to damage the drive boots. Have an assistant hold the drive by the intermediate shaft.

You will need: a mounting spatula or thin chisel, a hammer.

1. Remove the right front wheel drive (see Removing and installing front wheel drives).



2. Using a mounting blade against the outer ring of the bearing, press the bearing off the intermediate shaft.

NOTE: The center support bearing is usually removed for replacement if damaged.

NOTE: In this case, additional damage to the bearing during pressing with force applied to the outer ring is not important. If this bearing is missing on the newly installed drive, it is more advisable to install a new bearing on it, rather than one pressed from the old drive and having a reduced service life.

If a new bearing is not available, it can be removed from the old drive by striking the inner ring with a thin chisel.





3. Ask an assistant to hold the shaft and press the bearing onto the shaft by striking the inner ring with a chisel or mounting blade.

USEFUL TIP: You can also press on the intermediate support bearing using a section of pipe of a suitable diameter, at least 400 mm long. However, in this case, you will need to disassemble the internal drive joint so that you can rest the shaft on a solid support.
