Oil pump (Escort 5)

Removal

Remove the ground cable from the battery. Remove the accessory drive belt.

Remove the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover, timing belt, crankshaft timing pulley, axle ring and oil pan. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the oil intake pipe (see Fig. 2B.47).



Unscrew the pump and remove it from the front of the engine. The sealing ring in the oil pump housing must be replaced.

Installation

Before installing the oil pump, clean the mating surfaces. Before installing the oil pump, to avoid damaging the oil seal, remove the key from the crankshaft and wrap the crankshaft journal with adhesive tape. If the oil pump has been disassembled or if a new pump is to be installed, fill the pump with engine oil before installing it. To do this, turn the pump drive shaft and simultaneously introduce clean engine oil into the pump (see Fig. 2B.48).



Install the oil pump on the crankshaft and move it into place. Check that the mating surfaces of the pump, cylinder block and oil pan are aligned, then tighten the pump mounting bolts. Remove the adhesive tape from the crankshaft journal (see Fig. 2B.49, 2B.50).







Install the oil pickup tube using a new gasket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Install the axle ring onto the front end of the crankshaft, then insert the woodruff key into the crankshaft keyway.

Install the oil pan, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, timing belt cover and auxiliary drive belt pulley. Install and adjust the tension of the auxiliary drive belt.

Lower the vehicle and connect the battery.
