Removal
Remove the ground cable from the battery.
Remove the upper timing belt cover and head cover.
On carburetor engines, remove the fuel pump. On RTE engines, remove the camshaft position sensor.
Remove the ignition coil, support hanger and condenser from the end of the cylinder head.
Unscrew the nuts securing the valve drive levers. When installing the levers, use new nuts. Remove the valve drive levers and hydraulic tappets. The valve drive levers, hydraulic tappets, guides and spacer plates must be marked with adhesive tape or laid out in sets so that they fit into place during assembly (see Fig. 2B.21-2B.26)
Turn the engine crankshaft until the marks on the camshaft pulley and cylinder head, as well as on the crankshaft pulley and oil pump housing, are aligned.
Remove the camshaft pulley.
Remove the camshaft seal ring.
Unscrew the two bolts on the drive side and remove the plate securing the camshaft (see Fig. 2B.27, 2B.28).
Remove the camshaft plug from the rear of the cylinder head (see Fig. 2B.29, 2B.30).
Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head through the distributor mounting hole (see Fig. 2B.31).
Examination
Clean and inspect removed parts for wear.
Check the condition of the valve drive levers and the surfaces of the levers that are in contact with the ends of the valve stems for wear, scratches and grooves.
Compare the previously measured camshaft clearance with the required value. If the clearance exceeds the required value, the camshaft locking plate must be replaced.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following notes.
Before assembly, lubricate the camshaft bearings, camshaft and locking plate with engine oil. After tightening the locking plate mounting bolts, check the camshaft play.
After installing the camshaft, install a new sealing ring and a new plug on the rear side of the cylinder head (see Fig. 2B.33).
Lubricate the hydraulic lifters with oil before reinstalling them in their original locations in the cylinder head.
Lubricate and install the valve lifters and secure them with new nuts. Before each lever is tightened with a nut, the corresponding valve lifter must be at its lowest point (in contact with the cam base circle). Rotate the camshaft cam (by the crankshaft pulley bolt) as necessary to achieve this position.
