Examination
The fuel pump on HCS engines is most easily accessed from underneath the vehicle. The fuel pump can be checked by removing the fuel feed pipe from the carburetor and placing it in a suitable container. Remove the connector from the ignition coil to prevent the engine from starting.
Turn the engine over with the starter. If the fuel pump is in good working order, fuel should flow in pulses from the tube placed in the container. If there is no fuel supply, the pump must be replaced.
Removal
Depending on the engine type, there are 2 types of fuel pumps. Some models may also have fuel separators. Therefore, before removing the hoses, they must be marked. Remove the negative terminal from the battery. To improve access to the fuel pump, remove the air filter housing.
Mark and remove the fuel hoses from the fuel pump. Remove the nuts or bolts and remove the fuel pump. Remove the fuel pump gasket and remove the pump drive pusher on the CVH engine (see Fig. 4A.16). Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the fuel pump and engine.
Installation
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Check the correct connection and secure fastening of the fuel hoses.
