Disassembly
Remove the rack from the car and clean it from dirt.
Using the FORD MS-1516 or standard spring compressor, compress the spring on the shock absorber until the top spring cup is unloaded.
Unscrew the nut and remove the upper rack mounting bolt (see Fig. 10.31).
Remove the upper spring mounting cup and the support cup. Remove the coil spring from the shock absorber strut. If the spring needs to be replaced, slowly release it. If only the shock absorber needs to be replaced, do not release the spring.
Examination
Check all parts for wear, damage or deformation. Check the smoothness and uniformity of the shock absorber rod. Inspect the shock absorber for fluid leaks. Check the rod for pitting along its entire length.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- after assembling the shock absorber strut, tighten the upper spring cup mounting bolt to the required torque;
- check that the spring ends are correctly positioned in the spring pads.
