Removal
Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
Remove the negative battery terminal. Install a lifting device to support the weight of the powertrain while removing the crossmember. Set the steering gear to straight ahead and remove the steering column shaft mounting bolt.
Unscrew the bolts securing the power unit suspension to the cross beam (see Fig. 10.22).
Disconnect the connector from the oxygen sensor wiring. Unscrew the lock nuts and separate the exhaust inlet pipe. Unscrew and remove the heat shields from the underbody to access the gearshift mechanism.
Disconnect the gear shift mechanism.
Remove the pin, unscrew the tie rod ball joint mounting nut and, using a puller, press the ball joints out of the steering knuckles.
Unscrew the clamp bolt securing the lower arm ball joint to the steering knuckle and, using a lever or large screwdriver, remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Unscrew the bolt securing the right suspension of the power unit to the cross member. Unscrew the second bolt securing the power unit to the cross member.
Unscrew the lock nuts and remove the anti-roll bar links from the suspension. Place jacks under the cross member and unscrew the 8 bolts securing it. Lower the jacks and remove the cross member (see Fig. 10.24).
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- clean mating surfaces before installation;
- when installing the cross beam, align the bolt holes and tighten them to the required torque;
- when installing the lower control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle, set the clamp bolt to its original position and hold the bolt from turning when tightening the nut;
- secure the steering rod ball joint mounting nut from loosening with a new pin.
