Checking the parking brake of the FORD ATX gearbox (Escort 4)

            0

The check is performed on a warmed-up engine and gearbox. Each check should last no more than 5 seconds, otherwise the units may fail due to overheating. The check is performed if the maximum speed and dynamic characteristics of the engine have noticeably worsened.

1. Connect a tachometer to the car engine.

2. Secure the vehicle using the parking and service brakes.

3. Start the engine.

4. Set the gear selector lever to position "D" and briefly fully depress the accelerator pedal. The engine should increase speed to 2700±350 rpm.

5. Recheck the speed in this lever position after 30 seconds.

6. Perform a final check in the "R" position of the lever.

7. When checking, it should be taken into account that the engine speed drops by 125 rpm for every 1000 meters of elevation above sea level.

8. If the engine speed is less than 200 rpm, it is necessary to check the ignition timing, cylinder compression and fuel supply adjustment.

9. If the engine speed does not reach the norm by more than 200 rpm, the overrunning clutch in the converter may be defective.

10. If the engine speed is higher than normal, the forward gear clutch or the first gear overrunning clutch may be slipping.
