Loosen the wheel bolts and place the front of the car on stands. Remove the wheel and tighten the wheel mounting bolts so that when unscrewing the hub nut, do not cut off the brake disc mounting screws Using a special tool, fix the brake pedal in the depressed position and unscrew the nut 7 (pic. 4.5) hub 2 and remove washer 6.

1 - steering knuckle; 2 - hub; 3 - stuffing box; 4 - tapered roller bearings; 5 - dirt protection ring: 6 - washer 20.2x40.3x5 mm; 7 - nut.

Release the brake pedal and remove the wheel bolts. Remove and hang the caliper. Remove the hub assembly with the disc, using a puller if necessary. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the castellated nut of the tie rod ball joint and use a universal puller or Ford puller 13.006 to press out the joint. Loosen the caliper mounting bolt and, holding the wheel drive shaft by the outer joint, disengage the steering knuckle ball joint using tool 14.026. Remove the steering knuckle and secure it in a soft metal vise. Remove the dirt ring 5 from the groove of the steering knuckle, outer and inner oil seals 3 using a puller 21051 and remove the roller bearings Using a mandrel with a flat end, carefully knock out the outer races of the bearings, clean their seats.

To fit the bearings, place a block of wood under the steering knuckle and press in the outer race of the new bearing using drift 14.024. Turn the steering knuckle over and make sure. that the ring has reached the shoulder of the seat. Press in the outer race of the second bearing. Apply lithium grease to the bearings (to specification Ford S-M1 C-4515-A) and install the bearing. Lubricate the sealing lip with grease and place the grease in the space between the seal lips, fit the seal with special tool 14.024 with a reverse grip. Install the second bearing and the second oil seal in the same order. Install the dirt ring into the steering knuckle seat with a block of wood. Lubricate the splines of the drive shaft liberally and install the steering knuckle. Attach the suspension arm ball joint and tighten the caliper bolt. Connect the tie rod and secure it with a new castle nut and a new cotter pin. Install hub assembly with brake disc as far as possible on the drive shaft Using tool 14.022 (pic. 4.6) press the hub with the disc to the stop.

Lubricate the threads of the drive shaft with bearing grease and install the washer and new hub nut without tightening it. Install the brake caliper and tighten the two wheel bolts. Using a special tool, block the brake pedal in the depressed position and tighten the hub nut to a torque of 20.5–23.5 kgf·m. Tighten the nut, remove the wheel bolts and install the wheel. Lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts to a torque of 7.0-10.0 kgf·m Since March 1983, the manufacturer does not recommend filling the space between the bearings with grease in order to avoid creating grease pressure and leaking it through the seals. Put a little grease into the space between the lips of the stuffing box to replenish the main lubricant and reduce wear on the sealing lips. After installing the steering knuckle, insert special tool 14.026 into the gap between the jaws and turn it by 90°. bring the steering knuckle to the telescopic strut, align the holes for the bolt, install the bolt, remove the fixture and tighten the bolt to a torque of 8.0-9.0 kgf·m.
