Withdrawal

Remove the cylinder head chain, camshaft sprocket and oil pan. Turn the engine over and place it on the surface that mates with the cylinder head. Rotate the camshaft a few turns to move the pushrods away from the camshaft lobes.

Before removing the camshaft, check its end play (see fig. 4D.46).

Unscrew the two mounting bolts and remove the camshaft thrust plate. Remove the camshaft from the front end of the engine. Remove the pushers from the cylinder block and arrange them in the order of installation in the engine (see fig. 4D.47).

Examination

Check the camshaft bearing journals and cams for wear or damage. Examine the inside surfaces of the camshaft bearings for damage or wear. In case of failure of the camshaft bearings, they must be replaced at a service station. If the camshaft axial play exceeds the allowable values, then the thrust plate must be replaced.

Check up a condition of pushers In case of deterioration they are subject to replacement.

Installation

To install the pushrods and camshaft, turn the engine over. Lubricate and install pushrods in their places in the engine block.

Lubricate the camshaft bearings and thrust plate, then install the camshaft to the engine block.

Secure the camshaft with a thrust plate and tighten the mounting bolts to the required torque. Check that the camshaft rotates easily and that the camshaft play is within acceptable limits.
