Location of oil filler plug on late model transmission

1. Place the car in a horizontal position over an inspection pit. Check the oil level no earlier than 5 minutes after stopping the engine.
2. Clean the area around the transmission oil filler plug (See Fig. Oil Filler Plug and Shift Shaft Retaining Ring Cover Location and Fig. Late Model Transmission Oil Filler Plug Location).
3. On the plate fixed under one of the upper gearbox mounting bolts, read the code and number. If the last letter is D, the gearbox was manufactured before August 1985, and if E, since August 1985.
4. On early gearboxes, the oil level should be 5–10 mm below the bottom edge of the oil level plug hole.
5. On later gearboxes the oil level should be 0–5 mm below the lower edge of the oil level plug hole.

6. Changing the oil in a manual gearbox is not provided. However, if you need to drain the oil from the gearbox, you need to install a container under the union nut (indicated by the arrow) of the gearshift rod mount, unscrew the nut and drain the oil.
