In no case should the electrical characteristics of the generator be tested in a circuit with a voltage of more than 40 V. Diodes should not be tested in circuits with a DC voltage of more than 24 V. It is recommended to clean the generator parts with white spirit or trichlorethylene, dry immediately after cleaning with compressed air (especially the winding). When inspecting parts, check:
- the condition of the brushes, their degree of wear, fit to the rings and the clamping force;
- appearance of slip rings and inter-contact gaps. Clean only with fine-grained sandpaper;
- bearing condition. The lubricant embedded in them is designed for the entire life of their service;
- appearance of the rotor and stator. Make sure that their windings do not have breaks and signs of burning.
Drive Belt Tension Adjustment
Loosen the bolts securing the alternator to the cylinder block and the bolt of the tension bar. Move the generator away from the cylinder block so that the longest branch of the belt sags by 10 mm when the thumb force is applied to its middle. Tighten the alternator and tensioner mounting bolts.
