The alternator is removed and installed in the following order. Disconnect the wires from the battery and the connector block from the alternator. Remove the heat-insulating shield and unscrew the alternator mounting bolts. Feed the alternator to the engine and remove the drive belt. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the alternator from the vehicle. Install the alternator in the reverse order of removal. Install the alternator in place and tighten its mounting bolts. Tighten the drive belt and tighten the mounting bolts in the following order: tension bar mounting bolt; generator front mount bolt and nut; bolt and nut of the rear generator mount. Install the heat-insulating shield, connect the generator connector block and wires to the battery.
Replacing Bosch Generator Brushes
Disconnect the wires from the battery and remove the heat-insulating shield. Unscrew the screws securing the voltage regulator and remove the regulator. Unsolder the wires from the brushes and remove them together with the springs (Fig. 7.13). Install new brushes and springs in the brush holder and solder the wires. Install the voltage regulator, heat-insulating shield and connect the wires to the battery.

Lucas Generator Brush Replacement
Disconnect the wires from the battery and remove the heat-insulating shield. Disconnect the connector block with wires from the generator connector and remove the rear cover. Unscrew the brush holder mounting screws (Fig. 7.14) and remove the brushes. Install new brushes and secure the brush holder. Install the rear cover of the generator, attach the connector block, install the heat-insulating shield and connect the wires to the battery.

Motorola Generator Brush Replacement
Disconnect the wires from the battery and remove the heat-insulating shield. Disconnect the block with wires from the generator connector. Remove the voltage regulator and two leads. Unscrew the screws securing the brush holder (Fig. 7.15) and remove it. Unsolder the wires and remove the brushes. Install new brushes in the brush holder and solder the wires. Replace the brush holder and secure it with screws. Connect the leads and replace the voltage regulator. Connect the block with wires to the generator connector and install the heat-insulating shield. Connect the wires to the battery.
